Issue #3 May 2009 Finally found some time to update the blog!!! I wanted to start off the Blog with an apology for taking some much time since my last Blog. The truth is I have been working feverishly trying to survive in a rotten economy. Some of you fellows that I know on a more personal basis know that my day job is in Real Estate. That's right, I am a North Carolina Real Estate Broker...that and four bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. It's no news how bad the Real Estate business has been over the last year or so. I have been up focused in on my Real Estate business and the WWII German helmet website. So far, 2009 has been about the hardest year in my life when it comes to making a living. All I can say is that I am damn lucky to have launched my WWII German Helmet website four years ago on a whim. Without my WWII business, I would have simply been forced to update the resume and hit the pavement. The thoughts of having to punch a time clock and have a boss...well, that is not too appealing. I know plenty of you fellows do just that everyday of the week, so don't be offended. It's just that once you enjoy the autonomy and freedom of being self employed, it is almost impossible to go back to having a boss. At the end of the day, I will do what I need to do to support my family. The good news is, the Real Estate business is on somewhat of a rebound. I am not sure how long the bump will last, but it is positive. The Militaria business has held up better than most industries. I have noticed that inventories have been growing on a number of the larger websites, such as the Ruptured Duck and the Collectors Guild. I have never had a huge inventory but I did notice that the selling cycle was slowing and helmet prices were having to be adjusted downward to get them sold. I knew the slow economy would eventually snag the Militaria hobby, and it did finally get us during the 1st quarter this year. Recently, I have seen an increase in sales activity on my website, so perhaps the collectors are starting to regain some confidence in the markets. My personal opinion is still that WWII Collectables, especially the German items are a great investment. The traditional economic theory supports my position...that being good ol' Supply and Demand. The WWII items are always going to be in limited supply. Sure, during a down economy, people start selling off things to raise money, but in the end, there are always going to be a limited supply of the WWII collectables, especially the more scarce German items. Hang in there and stay positive as our economy will come back. Lastly, one of my good customers has recently launched a new German Helmet website. Be sure to stop by and check out Greg's website at www.germancombathelmets.com Until next time, happy hunting! Dave
